Young classes of permutations
نویسنده
چکیده
We characterise those classes of permutations closed under taking subsequences and reindexing that also have the property that for every tableau shape either every permutation of that shape or no permutation of that shape belongs to the class. The characterisation is in terms of the dominance order for partitions (and their conjugates) and shows that for any such class there is a constant k such that no permutation in the class can contain both an increasing and a decreasing sequence of length k.

Combinatorial applications of symmetric function theory to certain classes of permutations and truncated tableaux
The purpose of this dissertation is to study certain classes of permutations and plane partitions of truncated shapes. We establish some of their enumerative and combinatorial properties. The proofs develop methods and interpretations within various fields of algebraic combinatorics, most notably the theory of symmetric functions and their combinatorial properties. The first chapter of this the...
متن کاملPattern Classes of Permutations
Though still a relatively young subject within discrete mathematics, the study of pattern classes of permutations is one of the fastest growing and is useful in theoretical computer science as well as various areas of mathematics. There are two commonly used forms of notation for permutations: a1a2 . . . an denotes the permutation which sends i to ai for i = 1, 2, . . . , n, where each ai repre...
متن کاملAlgorithms for discovering and proving theorems about permutation patterns
We present an algorithm, called BiSC, that describes the patterns avoided by a given set of permutations. It automatically conjectures the statements of known theorems such as the descriptions of stack-sortable (Knuth 1975) and West-2-stack-sortable permutations (West 1990), smooth (Lakshmibai and Sandhya 1990) and forest-like permutations (Bousquet-Mélou and Butler 2007), and simsun permutatio...
متن کاملSkew-merged Simple Permutations
The simple permutations in two permutation classes — the 321-avoiding permutations and the skew-merged permutations — are enumerated using a uniform method. In both cases, these enumerations were known implicitly, by working backwards from the enumeration of the class, but the simple permutations had not been enumerated explicitly. In particular, the enumeration of the simple skew-merged permut...
متن کاملPermutations via linear translators
We show that many infinite classes of permutations over finite fields can be constructed via translators with a large choice of parameters. We first characterize some functions having linear translators, based on which several families of permutations are then derived. Extending the results of [9], we give in several cases the compositional inverse of these permutations. The connection with com...
